Descartes' Aljex

Transportation Management System
UI/UX Design
2017-2018

Descartes' Aljex is a Transportation Management System (TMS) catering to brokers, shippers, and 3PLs. Aljex operates as a commercial SaaS solution and books $3.5 billion in transaction revenue annually.

The project entailed a major redesign of the existing TMS interface as well as designs and specifications for a collection of new product features. The design deliverables went through multiple iterations to reflect client input and to incorporate feedback from marquee Aljex customers.

Content

Screens show annotated interface designs for Aljex transportation management system.

Global Navigation

 Header Navigation

Global navigation features include a new tabs system, menus, and account profile management options.

 Footer Toolbar

Persistent application toolbar is affixed to the base of the browser window.

Shipments

 Active Shipments

Interface provides brokers and managers a birds-eye view of shipments in transit alongside shipments pending carrier assignment.

Note: Aljex uses a color-coding system to signify the status of a shipment "at a glance".

 Shipment Filter

Shipments filter tool relies on a combination of shipment data, status information, and customized user presets.

 Checkbox Menu

A checkbox is associated to each shipment; this enables users to select multiple shipments for a batch operation.

Note: Aljex enforces a strict file-locking scheme. When a file is checked out by one user, the file is read-only for any other users.

 Toolbar Configuration

Menu allows users to configure buttons displayed on the active shipments toolbar and includes an option to remove the toolbar altogether.

 Color Key

Legend describes the color-coded indicators applied to each shipment respectively.

 Shipment Map

Google Maps interface displays contemporary geolocation information on active shipments.

 New Tab

Module loads a default screen featuring Recently Viewed content as well as query options to discover and load any Shipment, Quote, or Spot.

Split Screen > Vertical > Default

Split-screen window enables users to view shipment details without clicking away from Active Shipments interface.

Note: Support for multi-tasking options within the application was an abiding stakeholder priority.

Split Screen > Horizontal > Default

User controls split-screen window orientation (i.e., Portrait or Landscape).

Split Screen > Vertical > Shipment

Design shows a split-screen window populated with a Shipment record.

 Split Screen > Header Menu

Menu enables user to link to a specific module on the Shipment record loaded into split-screen window.

 Split Screen > Scroll Behavior

Design demonstrates split-screen interface behavior when the main browser window is mid-scroll.

 Shipment

Design provides an above-the-fold view of the main Shipment record & toolbar.

 Shipment > New Shipment

Design describes an import tool used to auto-populate a new Shipment record using the values of an existing Shipment, Quote, or Spot record.

 Shipment > Notifications

Design describes a menu to view time-based & event-based notifications per shipment.

 Shipment > Notifications > Configuration

Design shows a sub-menu option that enables users to configure notifications by content type, subtype, and delivery mode.

 Shipment > Overview (Read Only)

Design represents a summary view of shipment data.

 Shipment > Lane Switch

Design represents a module that enables users to disguise shipment information for business purposes.

 Shipment > Picks & Stops

Design represents a module that documents pick-ups & deliveries occurring between the origin and destination of a shipment.

 Shipment > More Information (Module)

Design represents a general information module comprising six unique screens.

 Shipment > All Modules

Design provides a master view of all shipment modules.

 Shipment > Minimized Rows

Design provides a view of all shipment modules minimized per row.

 Shipment > Toolbar Configuration

Design represents a preferences module that enables users to configure toolbar buttons when viewing a shipment.

Note: Like multi-tasking, feature customization was a stakeholder priority.

Quote

 Quote Record

Design represents a Quote record; the quote record operates as a kind of template for a shipment record.

Note: In the course of business, many Shipment records may be spawned from a single Quote record (see History module).

Spot

 Spot Record

Design represents a Spot form; the spot form supports a shipment for which a broker may assign a carrier.

Note: The Spot is either a one-off shipment or a recurring shipment without a consistent carrier.

Interface Notifications

 System Messages

Design outlines a variety of system messages based on user activity.
