Slipknot is a multi-platinum heavy metal band that formed in the late '90s. The band has nine members who are known worldwide for their signature face masks and spectacular stage shows.

The iOS and Android apps developed for this project enable fans to join a virtual Slipknot band, create their own mix-and-match versions of a Slipknot mask, and generate an image of themselves wearing their virtual creations. Furthermore, fans can share their virtual Slipknot band photos as well as their own individual customized mask photos with each other through a companion Facebook application. The concept was proposed by Slipknot member Shawn Crahan and the applications were built in partnership with creative agency Saatchi & Saatchi.

Join a band

User activity generates many virtual Slipknot bands
Each virtual Slipknot band (VSKB) has nine open slots
Each VSKB slot has an ID
Users join a virtual Slipknot band by taking a quiz
Quiz results map each user to a Slipknot band member ID (SKID)

SKID assigns user to a VSKB slot ID per the following logic:

If SKID matches an VSKB open slot ID, assign user
Else generate a new VSKB and assign SKID to corresponding slot ID

Create a mask
- User takes a photo of him or herself within the app
- User reviews and approves photo (or rejects photo & takes another)
- App layers a textured overlay treatment on approved photo
- User presented a 3 x 3 grid interface to mix and match mask elements
- User completes & approves creation of a virtual mask
- User saves virtual mask and subsequently appears in Slipknot virtual band
